An established neighbourhood in Etobicoke is transforming from a mature, low-rise community into a densifying area with new residential developments. To address enrolment pressures, the Toronto District School Board commissioned Etobicoke City Centre Public School: a new 823-student K–8 school and 88-space Child Care Centre.
We integrated the existing city park at the school’s north-east corner with the school play area, creating shared recreational space that serves students during school hours and the broader neighbourhood after hours. Key mature trees within the site were retained as focal points of the shared space.
A three-storey Atrium anchors the school, with the Learning Commons overlooking from the second floor. Surrounding it, specialty classrooms for music, art, and science support a broad curriculum alongside dedicated child care facilities.
Warm brick grounds the school in the neighbourhood’s established palette. Metal diamond-shaped siding accents signal its contemporary character, acknowledging the area’s ongoing evolution without competing with the residential context. Rainwater harvesting, cool roofs, and high-efficiency HVAC systems support long-term operating efficiency — a practical fit for a school designed to serve the community for generations.
