The HDSB’s Martin Street Public School is an award winning heritage conservation project. This 80,000 sq.ft. replacement school is located in downtown Milton, on the existing school site of the Town’s original schoolhouse.
The façade of the original century-old schoolhouse building was preserved, restored, and incorporated into the new state-of-the-art 2-storey elementary school. Brick repointing, new precast capping, new historically accurate windows and doors and other detailing were employed to update the crumbling wall and make it robust enough for the next 100 years while maintaining its original appearance.
The heritage façade is now the feature of the school’s Library/Learning Commons. It creates a truly unique learning environment that connects students and staff with the area’s history and architectural qualities of the original school.
